Aftercare is the most important defense against infection or other complications
during healing. We carry aftercare products that are designed to help
piercings heal in a clean, efficient way. Aftercare products are also
outlined in the APP brochures Aftercare Guidelines for facial and Body
Piercings and Aftercare Guidelines for Oral Piercings.
For new facial and body piercings, we recommend the use of Satin Soap and Sea Salt Soaks. For oral piercings, we recommend Tech 2000, Biotene, and Sea Salt Soaks.
These oils can be used to simultaneously condition some of the organic or
natural jewelry that our customers use for stretched piercings, such as bone, horn and wood. These items are all available for purchase. For stretchings, we recommend daily cleaning as with a new
piercing as well as the use of conditioning oils, such as tea tree, grapeseed, jojoba, coconut, and organic olive oil. |
The following are the three products that we recommend for use on initial piercings.
|
|
Satin soap is an antimicrobial cleanser, "designed to clean, re-moisturize and eliminate skin scaling and bacteria." Satin soap also bears a specific recommendation on its label for use on body piercings. We recommend that it is used twice a day and worked through the piercing via the jewelry, and thoroughly rinsed back out. Cleansing with the Satin Soap should be the last thing done in the shower or bath to clean away any residue from other products like shampoo or body wash.

Tech 2000 is an excellent mouthwash for oral piercings, as it is an alcohol free, antiseptic mouthwash. While we may also recommend Biotene, we
carry Tech 2000. These products are preferred because they are both alcohol free
products and will cause less scarring than products with alchohol like
Listerine. Tech 2000 may be used full strength or diluted with 2 capfuls to 1
cup (8 oz.) of water. This helps customers by making the product last longer
and it also prevents irritation from very frequent rinsing. Rinsing should last for 30-60 seconds. |
 |
Sea salt solution can be used on any piercing and is a great product for
reducing scar tissue and irritation while healing. This can make a dramatic
difference for how efficiently and comfortably a piercing heals. Sea salt
soaks and rinses are meant to simulate a natural saline
solution. Customers can dissolve 1/4 teaspoon of sea salt to one cup (8 oz.) of water. Distilled water is
optimal, and only non-iodized sea salt should be used. This solution can be rinsed over and through any piercing, or applied with
a saturated cotton ball or swab. Mixing this solution too strong can burn the skin, so only 1/4 teaspoon should be used. Salt water soaks
stimulate circulation, which is very beneficial to healing, and it can be done 2-4 times a day.

The following oils can be used to condition skin or jewelry but should only be used externally. It is recommended that customers find which oil(s) are compatible with their own skin, as some oils may be too harsh for certain skin types. These oils can be used one or two drops at a time, to rub onto the piercing or into the jewelry. A little goes a long way.

Our tea tree oil is concentrated and should be diluted to avoid irritation and kept out of the reach of children. Tea tree is a strong oil, but
it can have wonderful healing properties. It comes from the Tea Tree, and is usually produced in Australia. Tea tree oil is available in many markets, but it is often not very pure. Our tea tree oil is
certified organic. Customers should be aware that some people may find this oil harsh or
irritating, but for the people with whom it is compatible, it is very beneficial.

Yes, the olive oil you cook with, but ours is organic. This is important. Pesticides and fertilizers used on
olive trees can be secreted in the oil and cause irritation. This is a great, gentle oil. The product we carry is "from cold pressed, certified organic Spanish olives. A superior cooking oil and wonderful for cosmetic use." This is a nice, safe oil. |
|
Our jojoba oil is pure cold pressed and refined. This oil is not recommended for internal use. This oil is organic, so it will not cause irritation due to pesticides.
|
 |
Solvent alcohol extracted and refined, this oil is again not recommended for internal use. This is a pure vegetable oil. |
|
Coconut oil is often in a solid state, and ours melts at about 76 degrees, so it should be liquid enough to apply when worked with the fingers. This is a refined, fixed oil. Do not use this internally and keep it out of the reach of children.
We recommend the use of Coconut oil to condition organic stretching jewelry as
well.
